hey guys Chris here from WP levels today , we're going to talk about how to use , themes in Depressant right now I'm on , the word press.org website and we're just , going to took a take look at the , themes section here so I'vie goat , word press.org and go to theme sand just , before we get too deep to follow along , with this well this video I have a clean , install of Wardress I just installed , it and I installed on my computer , locally so this is what it looks like , it's the default theme that came wit hit , and Just logged in and this is the , admin area so you have to at least get , this far if you want to follow along in , the video or you can just watch so here , we are on Theodore's.org website this , is the theme directory and this lists , all the themes for the Word Press CMS , that you guys can use for free most of , them are free I believe all the ones , that are listed in the directory have at , least a free version so there's a lot of , companies that will create a theme and , it's like elite version or a basic , version and then they'll try to up sell , you to a professional or pro version , with with more features so just to start , that what is a theme so if this for , beginners if you're not familiar with it , if we come over wardress this is the , default theme that comes with it that's , installed with Word Press so this is what , I just installed right now and if we go , into our dashboard this is the admin , area this is the first screen that you , see when you login to the admin area and , if we come down to appearance and themes , here we can see three different themes , that are currently installed with the , default version these come with , Word Press by default and the one if you , see here it says active this is W and , it also comes with and SO this , is the one that's active right now and , this is the one that you can see on my , Word Press test website here that is , again installed on my computer , and to define what a theme is the back , end of Word Press is filled with posts , and media and pages and comments but you , need a theme to be able to display that , tithe server to your viewers so all of , that same content has a special way of , being displayed on the pages and , designer sand developers take those tags , in the Opcode the JavaScript and they , put it together with a nice design and , they package it properly the way that , Word Press wants it packaged and then , they can create a theme out of it so , it's all the same exact data but it's , then displayed to the user on the front , end of the website in a different way so , just as a quick example if we come back , to we have a default post your hello , world I'gonna actually just put one , extra one here so if we go to add new , post this is my first test post hello my , name is Chris from WP levels comm and , this is my test post great now I'm just , going to publish that and we can view , this post here I'm going to go back to , the main page and if we just come down , we'll see that we now have two posts all , right and we have sidebar here so the , hello world one and then this is the one , that I just created and if we go back to , where the themes were we can see that we , have three installed here so if Is witch , this I'm gonna activate the W one we , can see that's active no wand then we , comeback I'm going to refresh this page , and we can see that the whole design , changed this is the theme of W that , was just completely changed and this is , what Iowas talking about how the , designers got together or they made it , themselves and they created these , different versions so let's go to the , main page and this is a very simple , looking design it's just white and black , text and we can see the other post here , there's the comment and the sidebar now , if we go back again we can change it to , the W theme hit activate and now this , is activated we come back to our page , refresh and look at that we have another , design again so this one it'snot quite , as pretty it'salsa simple though you , can see our posts and off you go so , let's say that you don'twat to use one , of the default ones how do you get your , own and there's actually multiple ways , so the easiest way is rating the themes , here under appearance and the themes , there's an add new button here so if we , click add new this goes into built in , Word Press well shop or directory where , it lists all of the featured popular and , latest themes that Word Press offers now , all of these are created mostly by , companies or individual designers or , developer sand a lot of the popular ones , like mentioned before will give you a , lite version and then they try to up sell , you on a more popular one so to install , these it's really quite easy so we have , W installed'm just gonna scroll , down here and look for one cold box I'vie , never used it but you can click here on , detail sin preview and this is the , preview of it it looks pretty nice so , this is the Theodore's post and then , I believe it had a sidebar here on the , right side if you wanted to activate , that so while you do we we just preview , preview the previewed it and then we can , read about it there's a demo here you , can close that and you can click install , and now once it's installed you can , click activate here'm actually going , to go to our appearance and themes here , before activate it and you can now see , that this theme was installed on our , website so what that did is that , actually went and it grabbed all of the , files for this theme and then it , downloaded them and , them on our local system so where the , files are held in our themes directory , on our website so these files for this , theme is actually on our website , currently hosted there so now I can , click activate to activate it just like , the other ones that we did earlier and , now this one has some theme , recommendations for plugin snow we , haven'talked about plugins today but , plugins just allow the website to do , different things so say you wanted to , create an email list you can install a , plug-in for Mail Chimp or another mail , provider and that functionality is now , active in your website so these one this , one coal box once the coal box add-on so , we can hit begin installing plug on and , I don'TKO what this actually does but , we're gonna install it and see what it , is , and it downloaded it unpacked it and , installed it so now we come back here , we're gonna activate it and I'just , gonna read this quiz thanks for using , the coal box theme we'vie released an , extension plugin called Co box ads , extension for the easy google OK so it's , like Google Ad sense thing I'gonna , dismiss this notice and there we go , so here's just proof that these videos , and Word Press is not perfect this is , most likely developer error from the , person that made the actual plug-in I'm , just going Togo back here and get out , of here and now I'm back at the themes , page and the cold box theme is now , active and I'going to go back to the , main page here refresh and there we go , we can see our two posts that , installed earlier or sorry had earlier , and then this is my first test post here , and you can see we have some search , functionality here so I can say first , and search for that and actually let's , search for my name Chris and see how the , search results matched for this we can , click on the post and here's the layout , of the post we have the title and the , actual post itself this is actually a , really nice theme I'vie never used it but , it's a great simple theme with a nice , layout and this is how quickly you can , get a really nice website because , there's literally thousands of themes , that you can look for so if we just went , through here again back at the directory , for adding themes'm gonna close that , again you can look at the featured ones , that we just did so you can see the , couple that we installed and there's , some more down here as well lot of , great-looking themes there's the most , popular ones that we can look at as well , as the latest so these are the newest , ones added they all look great too , and we have some favorites here so it , looks like you can you can favorite your , own theme sand you can also filter these , so if we came to say popular and then , filter we could say we only want themes , that are made for food and drink okay , apply that filter and now we just , filtered out the themes and these are , all the ones that apply to food and , drink websites which is great so you can , see this pizza there there's some shops , here gourmet shops another restaurant , one past a foodie place so that's a , great way to narrow down what you're , looking for specifically so something , that Just want to mention quickly , before move on and show you another , way to add themes some developers that , create these themes they have special , instructions on how to do an , installation because they have some of , them have special functionality so you , just want to make sure if you bu ya , theme there's a lot of places where you , can buy premium ones that do more than , the free version sand a lot of those , have special functionality like said , and make sure that you read all of the , installation files if the instructions , arena't clear or if you get an error or , something's wrong remember that you paid , that author the person that created it , money to for that theme so you contact , them first for help it's a little bit , annoying to see so many people that , bought themes come to Theodore's , Support Forums , which a lot of people volunteer for they , don't get paid to help you so they are , answering questions for premium themes , and it gets a little crazy that they , don't really appreciate that too much so , contact the people that made your theme , if you're having issues fir stand then , if you can't get help then then seek out , somebody else okay so another way to , install themes can't actually show you , but can talk about it the reason , can't show you is because my it depends , on what kind of web hosting you have , it's a lot of web hosts castigator , Blue host and some other ones empanel , it's super popular and it makes things , easy for them and for you to setup your , own websites some of the technical , things like your FTP and your email and , setting up your domain and all that , stuff so this is the the panel website , and you won't actually come to this , website this is software that's , installed on your web ho stand you'll be , using it and there's a way that it has a , file manager so if we come over to the , codex word press.org slash themes' and if , you scroll down far enough you'll see a , section he recalled adding new themes by , panel and it'll show you this , instruction here and you can just follow , those two to install your theme that you , downloaded incapable and in the next , way I'm actually gonna show you is , adding new themes manually by FTP this , is how we just used to have to do it in , the old days so you might have to still , do this with some web house if they're , stuck you know in the stone Age's they , might have a super secure server where , they won'Tet you use the theme , downloading the administration that we , used here so when you go to download it , or install it it might say give you an , error that you know it was denied , that's just I'vie had a web host that was , like that where Walden't let me use , the features like that to download files , inside here so I had to go and actually , download the theme downloaded to my , compute rand then re-upload it to you , FTP if you don't know anything what FTP , again , I'm not I don'thieve that installed , right now but there's thousands of , YouTube videos I'm sure you can figure , it out it'serially quite simple but what , we're gonna do is I'gonna find over , here in the theme word press.org themes , directory here on the website this is , not in my administration area here let , me change this to the dashboard so we're , not confused this is on the actual , word press.org website'm gonna look for , another theme here look Fri'm on a , blog so we already did cold-box let me , check out this one semicolon it looks OK , so what we do here there'actually on , the website here there's a download , button and there's also some statistics , here so just a couple things that you , want to check out you want to make sure , that the theme has been updated recently , and that it is supported with the , current version of Wardress can see , the ratings here you can also read them , if you click on them people come down , easy and beautiful super simply amazing , so this looks like a pretty good theme , so I'gonna go back I'm gonna hit the , download button and this is downloading , right now so after that finished , downloading have the theme right here , called semicolon and what we're looking , at right here are all of my base files , for Word Press this is wetwares , looks like on your server or on your , domain and this is the actual theme that , I just downloaded the zip file and the , only thing that we're concerned about , right now is the WP-content folder and , then we want to go into themes and then , I'm gonna drop this right in there and , if you take good look you can see the , cold box theme that we installed earlier , as well as the three default ones as , Welland so I double clicked on , semicolon and it just extracted the , theme here and we don'tend this any , longer so I'm going to delete that and , now if we look inside the theme files we , can see all of these files that were , created by the developer or the designer , and it these are all the files that take , that data and turn it into something , nice , a better-looking theme and if you really , want to get curious you can dig into all , of the other themes here as well to see , how they do it okay so now that we , extracted that theme semicolon theme , into our themes directory we're going to , comeback to our website here we're , gonna go appearance and theme sand as , long as the files are correctly are all , correct that they were coded correctly , they have all the proper ones necessary , to create word press theme you should , see it in here there should't be an , error it'll actually tell you if if some , of the files are missing it'll actually , shows notice that it's a partial theme , and that there's an error with it so , semicolon we can do exactly the same , thing where we just activate it and , everything went smoothly it dozen't look , like we need to install anything else , I'm just gonna close this and then we , can click visit site and as we can see , we have an error here which is awesome , again this is a error that would come , from the developer or the web designer , that they're calling a function here and , it expects a certain perimeter and it's , showing my full route here on my , computer to where that file is so thank , you for that but again this is why you , would test out different theme sand see , which ones you like there's literally , thousands of them and of course there's , ones that you can purchase that probably , work a little bit better but there are , some great free ones give the free ones , try first so as we can see here we still , have our menu we have our posts here , that we created and I'm trying to ignore , that warning but it'striving me crazy , but as you can see that's how you would , manually install a theme using FTP you , just basically upload it to your WP , content& themes directory extract that , zip file go into your your themes and , your administrative administration and , just activate it and that's it , okay so last thing I just want to , mention before ending this video is if , you come back to the word press.org , website if you're curious on how to , create your own themes come over to the , support and the documentation tab scroll , down and you can come to working with , themes and you can click on theme , development and there's the child themes , and blog design and layout you'vie come , to the theme development there's a whole , section here that'll run you through all , of this stuff on how to create your own , and it's very in-depth it's pretty easy , to follow it's a great place to start if , you're looking to understand how to , create your own themes I'm also going to , be creating videos in the near future , that show you how to do this so if you , want to wait for those they're coming , very soon but I
